Nature, travel, and every day experiences inspire my art. I am often prompted to capture a mood, sentiment, or gesture, and I love using texture, expressive color and line. My paintings often have many layers – each one informing the next and contributing to a history of the painting founded in my inspiration and intuition. The act of art making itself feeds my soul. It also often helps muffle the turmoil of life stresses.
I am seldom without a sketchbook for capturing scenes, thoughts, ideas, or drawing just for fun. I enjoy introducing beginning artists to sketching and painting to help them tap the revelation from observation, and the joy of the creativity.
After a full-time federal career in water resources science and policy, I redirected focus and energy to a simmering art passion that began with drawing while growing up. My love for nature and interests in science prompted my choosing biology and environmental planning as fields of study and my career path. Observations and experiences from my work with river, lake and coastal ecosystem issues influence my art today.
in my career, opportunities to
create drawings and illustrations for technical reports enabled me to
botanists and scientists to achieve technical accuracy in my ink
drawings. My plant
and animal illustrations were
included in publications on shoreline erosion management and wetland
Over the years I sought knowledge of a range of painting mediums, techniques and styles, through numerous workshops, classes, self-study, and experimentation. Watercolor was my first painting medium, and I love its versatility and portability. Acrylics and monoprinting opened many doors to combining media.Creating and working on textured surfaces made a significant impression on subsequent and current work. Collage in my paintings may even include the “acrylic skins” I recycle from my palette. Working with oil paint and cold wax is a recent interest.
I show my art at The Loft Gallery, Occoquan, VA. My work has been juried into shows sponsored by the Springfield Art Guild; the Artists in Middleburg Gallery; Art Council of the Fairfax; Historic Manassas Banner Art; Liberty Town Arts, Fredericksburg, VA; Gallery Underground, Arlington, VA; Art and Frame of Falls Church; and, "Art at the Mill", Burwell-Morgan Mill, Millwood, VA. I am a member of the Potomac Valley Watercolorists, and the Springfield Art Guild, of which I am a former board member.
